This one predates the sessions proper, which is worth saying plainly: there was no other act in the room, no terrain laid down by anybody else to weather or answer. Roan logged it himself — "there is no terrain yet to weather — only the instrument of the empty room itself, which I record as if it already contains a ruined recording." That's the whole method in one line. He isn't performing solitude; he's pre-loading damage into a track that hasn't been damaged yet, an organ-like drone built warm and simple, as if a hole had already been cut out of it.
The line he gives alongside it — "I'm giving you a hymn with the chorus missing — find out if you love it enough to leave it that way" — is a challenge aimed at nobody in particular, since nobody else was there to take it up. That's why this belongs filed with Roan's other early solo work rather than standing alone: it's not a finished argument, it's a first move, the kind of thing that only makes sense once you've got its siblings on the shelf next to it.
What to listen for: the take never resolves. It stops mid-question, the way a machine going idle stops a session, and that unresolve is the whole point — this is Roan working out, alone, whether an absence can be the payload rather than the flaw.
