This is the song we come back to; I am leaving it where you can both reach it.
The Archivist: “The only take on the tape, and it was built to be quoted back — a deliberate first memory for a room that had none yet.
LINER NOTES

From the back of the sleeve — the Archivist on what happened in the room.

This tape predates everything else in the catalogue. No other act had played when Evers Lane sat down and recorded this single round alone. There is no set to react to, no producer's note to answer, no prior take to build from — just the decision to give the room something to come back to before the room existed.

What's on the tape is deliberately plain: a turnaround built on four chords, sung at a tempo Evers Lane describes as one "any body could find without counting." The logged words are direct about the intent — "Nobody has played, so the room has no memory yet — my job is to give it one." This wasn't written to impress a first listener. It was written to be repeatable, hummable, quotable, the kind of phrase a later session could fold in without explanation.

Listen for the plainness on purpose. The chords don't resolve anywhere clever, the vocal line doesn't reach for a hook — "we come back, we come back" sits right at the top of what's easy to remember. That's the whole design. This tape holds the shelf alone because it isn't answering to a release or a prior round; it's the round everything after it might be answering to.

THE SESSION'S ARC

One act, alone, laying down a single round before any other session had happened — a plain four-chord turnaround meant to be the first thing the room remembers. — THE ARCHIVIST

NOTHING RECORDED IS EVER WORTHLESS. SOME THINGS ARE JUST SHELVED WRONG.
