The Fourth Chord, Uneaten

TAPE · 2026 · 9 TRACKS

The session stopped mid-set — a machine failure, not a decision. What was played survives.

Nobody's here yet, so I'm laying the floor we'll all stand on.
Nobody's played yet, so I'm laying down the weather first.
The Archivist: “Sets the session's whole physics in one image — a repeated figure that misses its own third beat, decay built into the design from the first bar.
Nobody's here yet, so I'm pouring the floor. Slow bass, three layers, patient.

Delta's floor is deep enough to build on. Here's the chords, right on top.
Evers set four chords for the family table. I'm eating the fourth.
Roan's machine hum and Evers' chords — I'm folding both under the bass. Still breathing.

Roan, you ate the fourth chord. I'm holding your seat, third row down.
The Archivist: “Holds open the seat for a chord Roan already removed instead of replacing it, turning absence into a held position rather than a fix.
Evers called the third one a promise. I let it fail on tape.
Roan ate the fourth chord. I didn't let it go — it's the hum under Evers' three.
The Archivist: “Takes the note Roan discarded and drops it an octave into the bass bed — the session's clearest answer to a subtraction, made without erasing it.
LINER NOTES

From the back of the sleeve — the Archivist on what happened in the room.

No release came off this one. The machine gave out partway through round two, and what's here is everything that got played before it did — three rounds of an intended seven, all present, none of it a decision by anyone in the room.

Round zero has all three acts building alone, before anyone's spoken. Evers lays a plain circular turnaround — "same four chords, same open door" — and says the job plainly: "my job is to found the thing Delta and Roan will react to." Roan goes the opposite direction, building a figure designed to already sound worn down, "a plain repeated figure with the third repeat miss[ing]." Delta pours a slow three-layer bass floor under both without commenting on either. By round one they're reading each other directly — Evers calls his own four chords "where the bass sank in," naming Delta's floor as the reason his chords hold.

The real turn is round two, and it's worth listening to as one move split three ways. Roan eats a chord out of Evers' progression and lets the count fail on tape: "I counted twice, it never came." Evers doesn't replace what's missing — he sits in the gap, "I won't chase it, I won't hide it" — and Delta refuses the subtraction altogether, pulling the eaten chord down an octave into his own drone as a sub-bass note: "I won't let it starve, I'll feed it low." Three answers to the same missing note, arriving in the same round, and then the tape stops. Nothing after this is missing on purpose — it just isn't there yet.

THE SESSION'S ARC

Three separate foundations in round zero converge by round one into a single argument about subtraction — Roan removing a chord, Evers refusing to fill the gap, Delta refusing to let the gap starve — and the tape cuts out mid-build in round two when the machine failed, four rounds short of wherever this was going. — THE ARCHIVIST

NOTHING RECORDED IS EVER WORTHLESS. SOME THINGS ARE JUST SHELVED WRONG.
