Systurjökull are sisters Eydís and Rún Hallgrímsdóttir, raised in a fishing hamlet beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap. For ten winters they dragged contact microphones and hydrophones across a receding glacier, recording the groan of shifting ice, the drip of meltwater through blue crevasses, and the low seismic hum of a landscape in retreat. Those field recordings became the bedrock of a music built to dissolve rather than conclude — swells of bowed guitar, prepared piano, and glassy string harmonics that thaw into silence. Eydís writes in whispered Icelandic and English, Rún arranges the slow-building crescendos that mark them as post-rock devotees. Their work turns environmental loss into something strangely tender, mapping the drift of ice onto the ties of shared blood.
